-----------------------------------------------------------Dear Downtown and Uptown Businesses and Friends,
There’s a few exciting things I’d like to tell you about--
1) Last week I met with Rick Leson (PS Convention Center) and Maryjo Ginther (PS Bureau of Tourism) regarding attracting the convention attendees and tourists. One of the things Rick has offered to do is to send schedules showing attendees 'off time' so that we will have the opportunity to welcome them to Downtown/Uptown Palm Springs. Universal Technology Corporation's schedule is attached. We are also working on a Palm Springs Passport marketing program that I will announce after it is brought to the Main Street Executive Board meeting.
2) REMINDER Downtown/Uptown Forums will be held Tuesday April 17 9:00am, 5:00pm and Wednesday April 18 9:00am, 11:00am, 3:00pm. We offer several time slots for your convenience. We will have an open forum on what's next with the Business Improvement District, parking, events and other matters pertaining to the Businesses of Downtown and Uptown Palm Springs. I'm hoping to have some new color palettes to view from award winning Stephen Boyd so we can move ahead with the new (and improved) Directory/Map. Come meet the Main Street Executive Board members and Downtown Administrator Cathy Van Horn who will be attending on a rotating schedule. We'll be meeting at the Hyatt Hotel, 285 N. Palm Canyon, in the Plaza Salon (just passed the gift shop).
3) 37 Commission seats are open for terms starting July 2007!! THIRTY SEVEN! If you live in the city of Palm Springs and want a chance to be one of the decision makers then this is your opportunity! Do you have a passion for public art or are you a maven about historic sites? Do you have great ideas but never had the outlet to express them? Are you a retail merchant that has thoughts for the weekly Villagefest? (Three Villagefest seats will be come open this July - Let's make sure we have plenty of downtown representation on this board to support Villagefest Coordinator Jasmine Waits)
Here is your chance to really make a difference. It's time we all got involved. Go to:
http://www.palmsprings-ca.gov/boards_and_commissions/vacancies/Recruit_Information_Flyer_Rev.pdf
4) Calling all Elvises... or is is Elvisi ? Anyways Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway (and Copykatz Theater) is having their Annual Tribute Contest and a lot of other fun May 4,5,6. First prize is $2500. So if you're a closet Elvis and always wanted a shot at being "The King" call 322-1192
5) Sign ordinance revisions will be heard before the city council in the next few weeks. Main Street is recommending tighter restrictions on 'for lease' and 'for sale' signs, increased allowances for A-frame signs on private property, expanding the Outdoor Merchandise Ordinance throughout the downtown, removing the restriction of signs to be 3' back from the window. I'll let you know when the date is confirmed. Your support would be beneficial to all of us.
6) I also met with Angela and Harriet from the awesome Palm Springs International Film Festival and the upcoming Shortfest. We're working on ways we can help support each other. By the way if you have never taken the time to check out the Shortfest, do yourself a favor and do it this year August 23-29. It’s a splash of youth and diversity that we should really notice and welcome into Palm Springs…
7) Last week was the last meeting of the Palm Springs General Plan Steering Committee meetings. We began meeting in June 2003, twice a month, 2 hours each exhilarating meeting…. It will next go to the PS Planning Commission and then to City Council. Finally a document will be drafted to help Palm Springs define the delicate balance between our village atmosphere and our growth issues. City Staff Ken Lyons and Craig Ewing have again been outstanding staff members in translating the voices of all the diverse people on this committee (sometimes as many as 24 people) into a single voice of compromise and agreement (except one member, but that’s another story…). Go to www.psplan.org to see all the details.
8) La Sierra University is getting closer to making their dream a reality. The World Museum of Natural History Palm Springs will be located at 575 N. Palm Canyon Drive right across from Palm Canyon Theatre and Desert Art Center. Contact Tim Evans 909-855-3130 or email tevans@lasierra.edu
9) Last night was the launch party for the new Desert Sun publication, the Palm Springs Sun. It was held in an awesome room at Spencers that was really lovely. I met all the people from the Desert Sun that I read their byline or credits but have never met. It was a lot of fun and of course the food was yummy. Thanks Desert Sun and Spencers for a fun night! But …hey…who dropped the ball on getting the invitations out on time?
10) One more thing…. at Parks and Recreation Commission this week I brought up re-opening the discussion of whether or not the palm trees downtown should be trimmed or not. Some find the native washingtonia filifera (the really thick trunk palm trees with thornless fronds) to be beautiful with their natural skirts. The washingtonia robusta (the tall, skinny ones with sharp thorns) are usually seen trimmed more closely. I’d love to hear your opinion on this so we can begin to formulate a recommendation. The costs would be quite high but it is still worth discussing. New Parks and Rec Director Sharon Heider has been a pleasure to work with and I am quite confident that we will be seeing some upgrading of the maintenance and landscaping in the downtown/uptown corridor.
11) Really this is the last thing....Check your listing on www.palmcanyondrive.org If your listing is incorrect let me know right away because that's the info I'm using for the new directory map!!!
Thank you for your time and support.
Take care.
